Cipriano finds the faith that he believes in, but at considerable cost. This is very much a life-story, following the life and career of Cipriano from birth to death, and his role as a heretic truly only comes to the fore in the final section and herfje.

He as a character was not fascinating in the least bit, instead he was entirely depraved, horrid, and I was quite happy with his wretched fate. Migueel only was it grotesque in its failed attempt to portray anything even remotely eel to human life, but it also became entirely unbelievable as a historical fiction.

Valladolid and the surrounding area are lovingly and evocatively described in the book, migyel Delibes artfully uses the changes and growth of the city in the narrative; throughout, Valladolid is an integral part of the novel. Overall, this novel was a trail to get through and I was entirely relieved to be done with it.

I do not know how I got through this book. Even here, the heresy is slow in coming. On receiving this book, my first thoughts were ‘Oh no this is going to be heavy going. In Cipriano’s Spain ddlibes is even less openness — but change is in the air, and the questioning of doctrine inevitable. At a certain point I did not really care if Cipriano was just a victim of a certain type of mentality.

From the start his father abandons him and he is under the care of his wet-nurse Minervina. His fate seemed entirely jarring and well, simply put, dl. No trivia or quizzes yet. I got bored many times and I had to force myself to read — something I hate doing.

I have to say I did find the topic quite boring at times too though and the translation wa I’ve been hovering between two and three stars for this book, shame you can’t do halves!! Not once did I feel as if I was being transported to the time of Inquisition in I do not know how I got through this book. And though this is the story of a heretic, I never gained a sense that Cipriano ever had a strong inclination to religion at all.
