Libro del desasosiego by Fernando Pessoa. The pages remaining just seem insurmountable. Included in the auction was an unopened, dusty trunk, purchased by a college student looking for a cheap conversation piece. Tedium is not a sickness brought on by the boredom desaossiego having nothing to do, but the worse sickness of feeling that nothing is worth doing. What a badass cover too. I think of Salinger in that degree, who began to feel strongly that being published was an unwelcome intrusion and distraction imposed upon the work itself.

I once even flirted briefly with the idea of creating a fake diary, or set of diary entries which I would ascribe to an imaginary person living within the bounds of an imaginary world somewhere else.

There are images tucked away in books that live more vividly than many men and women.

I just tend to find books centered around their writing pesoa into one of two categories. Life is empty and dreary and oppressive and so on. This was desasosieego to me by a friend of mine, Chicago bizarro author David David Katzman, specifically because of the growing influence it’s apparently pesska these days on all lovers of the surreal; because for those who don’t know, Fernando Pessoa was sort of the Portuguese version of Franz Kafka, a wh Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography [cclapcenter. He was a writer who used more than 70 heteronyms and each one had a biography of his own.

You hesitate to talk to him. It’s even suggested that it’s one of the great Modernist novels of the 20th Century.

View all 3 comments. However, there is another category where this book falls under. I keep my own feelings out of everything, in order to be able to feel. For Pessoa, life is a dream.

Lists with This Book. This book doesn’t tell standard story. After Pessoa died, a trunk filled with his unpublished and unfinished writings was found. Aug 07, M. I don’t care if this makes me happy or unhappy, and I don’t much care. But, as I was warned both by the book’s title and by more than one Portuguese, I found the comments disquieting, even more depressing.


Pessoa invented multiple personas for himself that he called heteronyms, and each of his novels or collections of poetry was written from the perspective of an alter ego. These are all items which combined to draw me towards The Book of Disquiet when I found it in the middle of a stack on the floor in the wrong section of Bookman’s Corner.

He works in an office as a bookkeeper, probably few years before fernnando retirement. Its beauty resides in the quality of writing, which can be enjoyed by all readers with a metaphysical bent.

This is one of many similar statements which Pessoa makes within, but was the most convenient for me to quickly access.
